This federal Project Grant award of $294,729 from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) program will fund the development of a versatile and compact telerobot with haptic feedback and physics-informed simulation for safety-enhanced neurovascular interventions. The key products and services to be delivered include: 1) Developing full actuation, coordinated control paradigms, and a patient-side haptic module for a robotic system; 2) Establishing a machine learning-assisted physics-based simulation framework for pre-operative training and intra-operative situational awareness; and 3) Studying human-robot interaction to evaluate manual, partial actuation, and full actuation procedures. The goal is to design intelligent robots integrated with pre-operative virtual training and intra-operative virtual fixtures to improve the effectiveness, usability, safety, and clinical outcomes of neurovascular interventions. The award was made to North Carolina State University, a prominent 1862 Land Grant institution, and will run from September 2024 through June 2028.
