The recipient will conduct a quasi-experimental cohort study of Ka Lahui O Ka Po, an established, culturally grounded birth preparation program...
- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded the University of Utah $768,620 on September 1, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to conduct research applying network science methods to emergency surgical care delivery for older adults. The award funds investigation of how health system structure and regional hospital networks influence access to emergency general surgery care and patient outcomes among Medicare...
- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded the University of Washington $2.938 million on September 3, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307). The award funds the ENRICH (Enhancing Kidney Care in Community Health Centers) project, a mixed-methods research initiative to improve kidney disease management in federally qualified health centers, rural health clinics, and other community-based providers serving high-risk...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Hawaii at Manoa received a $2.83 million Project Grant awarded September 1, 2025, through the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307). The project, "Navigating Hypertension and Food Insecurity: A Produce Prescription Program to Improve Health Outcomes for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Communities," addresses the...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Brigham Young University $5.477 million under Cooperative Agreement U01AG090346 on September 15, 2025, to recruit and sequence 5,000 Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander participants for Alzheimer's disease research under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866). The project will conduct whole genome sequencing, SNP array genotyping, and standard laboratory assays on blood samples collected from 1,000 participants annually over five years. Each participant...
- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $2,306,030 on September 13, 2025, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to conduct research on hypertension retention and cardiovascular risk reduction among people with HIV who use safety-net clinics. The recipient will conduct an explanatory sequential study combining quantitative survey data and qualitative contextual...
- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $201,362 on September 1, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to develop a continuous metabolic syndrome risk score for the Yup'ik Alaska Native population. The recipient will integrate traditional clinical metabolic syndrome components—waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, and HDL-cholesterol—with...
- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded the National Bureau of Economic Research Inc. $2,159,469 on September 3, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to conduct a Project Grant investigating the geographic distribution of dialysis facility expansion and its effects on health outcomes among patients with end-stage kidney disease. The research will analyze whether the 70 percent increase in dialysis centers over the...
- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded The University of Chicago $1,307,468 on July 19, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to elucidate novel epigenetic contributions to multiple myeloma risk disparities between African American and European American populations. The research investigates cytosine modifications—specifically 5-hydroxymethylcytosines (5HMC)—in circulating cell-free DNA as drivers of the 2- to...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded the University of Utah $248,999 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) for basic research into WNK1-dependent macropinocytosis and emergency myelopoiesis. The project investigates how the chloride-sensing kinase WNK1 regulates myeloid progenitor cell fate, particularly the shift from monocyte/macrophage lineage commitment toward emergency granulopoiesis during systemic infection. Research...
The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded the University of Utah $769,998 on September 1, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to investigate genetic determinants of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome in Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations. The award funds expansion of the Utah Pacific Islander Study biorepository to enroll more than 1,800 deeply phenotyped Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander individuals across the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome spectrum, with biospecimen archiving and ongoing genetic and multi-omics analyses. Prior work under this initiative identified population-specific genetic variants in the ASAH2 and ACADVL genes associated with diabetes, kidney disease, and cardiometabolic risk in this population, and established the first Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander pangenome reference using long-read whole-genome sequences from eight Pacific islands to improve genetic variant detection including novel structural variation. The University of Utah, through its Office of Sponsored Projects Division, serves as the recipient. Performance takes place in Utah with a period of performance extending through April 30, 2031. This is a project grant supporting basic and clinical research into health disparities affecting a population bearing disproportionately high disease burden.
