The University of Rochester was awarded a $1,592,506 Project Grant from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research (CFDA 93.307) program. The grant, titled "ACTIVATEXTO: Advancing Smoking Cessation and Physical Activity Among Latinos," aims to develop and test a culturally-adapted smoking cessation text messaging intervention for Latino populations. The project builds on the university's previous work in developing the "DecideTEXTO" intervention, which has demonstrated success in increasing smoking abstinence among Latino participants. The current grant will allow the team to further advance and evaluate this evidence-based, community-engaged approach to addressing the disproportionate burden of tobacco use in Latino communities. The project will be conducted in partnership with the Latinos Contra el Tabaco community advisory board. Additionally, the University of Rochester has issued a $292,506 sub-award to HMH Hospitals Corporation (Hackensack University Medical Center) to support the project's research activities. The sub-awardee will contribute its expertise in medical research and community engagement to help deliver the smoking cessation intervention.
