- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital $175,175 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop and implement a digital sleep intervention for preschoolers in foster care. The award funds development, pretesting, and evaluation of Nurturing Sleep, a trauma-informed digital public-health-level sleep intervention administered to foster caregivers of children ages 36–71 months. Aim 1 involves...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill $166,248 on September 26, 2025, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to conduct research triangulating causal effects of sleep, inflammation, and cardiometabolic disease. The research will identify oxylipin biomarkers associated with sleep problems—including insomnia, sleep apnea, and short sleep duration—and their relationship to cardiometabolic disease. The study...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Children's Research Institute $500,500 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.HDR) to conduct a prospective observational study integrating bedside sleep monitoring tools for preterm infants during the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stay. The research addresses sleep-cycle maturation in preterm infants born during the extrauterine third trimester. Sleep...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Yale University $839,771 under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) on September 1, 2026, to develop and refine a behavioral sleep intervention for low-income families in pediatric primary care settings. Yale will adapt and test Sleep Well, Bee Well (SWBW), an evidence-based intervention grounded in social cognitive theory, for implementation in primary care offices serving low-income populations. The R61 phase (Year...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Seattle Children's Hospital $1,736,235 on August 15, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to investigate sleep health and its relationship to childhood systemic lupus erythematosus (CSLE) symptoms within the sociocultural and neighborhood contexts of affected youth. The research examines associations between sleep health dimensions—including duration, efficiency, regularity, and daytime sleepiness—and CSLE...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded the Research Foundation For Mental Hygiene, Inc., operating through its New York State Psychiatric Institute, $261,716 on July 22, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to adapt and pilot a doula-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) intervention for pregnant individuals experiencing prenatal sleep disturbances. The project addresses the gap between evidence-based CBT-I treatment efficacy...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Emory University $100,228 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to conduct longitudinal research examining associations between sleep health, protective factors against psychosocial adversity, and stress-related biomarkers including allostatic load and epigenetic age acceleration. The project analyzes multidimensional sleep health—encompassing regularity, satisfaction, alertness, timing,...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded Boston Children's Hospital $171,600 on September 1, 2026, under CFDA 93.837 (Cardiovascular Diseases Research) to support career development and mentored research in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea diagnostics. The award funds the recipient investigator's training in three areas: predictive modeling and machine learning, advanced physiological signal analysis, and implementation science for translating research into clinical...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Rush University Medical Center $783,899 on July 5, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to examine the impact of early elementary school start times on sleep health, learning, attention, and obesity in young children through second grade. The study enrolls 200 kindergartners—50 night owls and 50 morning larks attending early-start schools (by 8:00 a.m.), and 50 night owls and 50 morning larks attending...
- The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute awarded Emory University $248,705 on February 2, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to investigate relationships between naturalistic light exposure and sleep regularity. The project examines how dimensions of light exposure impact sleep regularity and identifies biological markers of sleep regularity, with investigation of moderation by factors such as age and sex. The research develops and validates findings...
The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded the University of South Carolina $100,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310) to conduct a randomized controlled trial evaluating a prevention-focused behavioral sleep intervention for parents of preschool-aged children. The study will enroll 198 parent-child dyads (children ages 2–4 years with insufficient sleep at baseline and no reported sleep disorder) and randomize them to receive either the Sleep Tight intervention or standard-of-care wait-list control. The Sleep Tight intervention delivers two phases: six weeks of weekly virtual one-on-one sessions with an interventionist, followed by twelve weeks of booster messaging via text messages and brief phone calls during a maintenance period. The trial will assess efficacy for improving child sleep and explore broader benefits for child social-emotional functioning, parent sleep, and parent wellbeing. Assessments occur at baseline and at multiple follow-up timepoints through the award period. Performance of the work occurs in Columbia, South Carolina. The award period runs through June 30, 2031.
