Project Grant R01HL185686
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Mayo Clinic $593,663 on August 15, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to investigate thrombolysis resistance in acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion. The project addresses the failure of intravenous thrombolysis with tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) to achieve successful recanalization in most eligible patients. Mayo Clinic will conduct three integrated research activities: define metabolic...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Mayo Clinic $149,214 on September 30, 2025, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to investigate lipid-loaded macrophages in atherosclerotic plaque inflammation. The recipient will characterize the metabolic landscape and cell fate decisions of atheroma-derived macrophages under lipid loading, examining how lipid-associated macrophages release extracellular adenosine triphosphate as a pro-inflammatory signaling...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Mayo Clinic received a $783,661 Project Grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837), awarded September 5, 2025, with completion scheduled for August 31, 2026. The award funds a pragmatic, randomized clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness and safety of oral midodrine as a vasopressor-sparing agent in patients with sepsis-associated hypotension. The study seeks to reduce intensive...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Mayo Clinic $1,562,026 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to conduct a mechanistic and causal inference analysis of propofol-associated hypertriglyceridemia (P-HTG). The research will establish a prospective observational cohort with systematic triglyceride monitoring and comprehensive lipoprotein phenotyping to define P-HTG epidemiology, distinguish clearance-defect from production-excess...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Mayo Clinic $242,100 on August 15, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to investigate treatment-resistant insomnia, with work completed by July 31, 2028. Mayo Clinic will define and quantify the prevalence of treatment-resistant insomnia in a real-world clinical sample using electronic health record data from the Mayo Clinic Biobank and Mayo Clinic Tapestry Project, supplemented by chart review validation....
- The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health within the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Mayo Clinic $764,848 on September 9, 2025, under the Medical Library Assistance program (CFDA 93.879) to conduct a multicenter randomized clinical trial of virtual world-based cardiac rehabilitation designed to promote data-powered cardiovascular health among cardiac patients. The project runs through July 31, 2029, with performance at...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Mayo Clinic $820,111 on August 15, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to investigate the cell-specific role of the CD40L-CD40 co-stimulatory dyad in modulating atherosclerosis and natural antibody production. The project examines how CD40 expression on B1 cells—innate B cells that produce atheroprotective anti-oxidation-specific-epitope (OSE) immunoglobulin M—protects against atherosclerosis by...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded the Regents of the University of Minnesota $231,000 on August 15, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop and validate a risk prediction tool for thromboembolism in heart failure patients without atrial fibrillation. The project will integrate clinical variables with cardiovascular magnetic resonance biomarkers to create the first comprehensive risk stratification score for incident ischemic stroke...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Beckman Research Institute of The City of Hope $697,806 on August 15, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop integrative machine learning approaches that decode cardiomyocyte subtype dynamics in heart failure progression. The research addresses molecular mechanisms governing the transition from adaptive cardiac hypertrophy to pathological heart failure. The recipient will generate and analyze...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Mayo Clinic $761,573 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to conduct a pragmatic, open-label, randomized clinical trial comparing the effectiveness and safety of azithromycin versus doxycycline in combination with beta-lactam therapy for hospitalized adult patients with community-acquired pneumonia. The trial will enroll and randomize 1,120 adult patients hospitalized with community-acquired...
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Mayo Clinic $801,170 on August 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to conduct HOPE: Advancing HFPEF Management Through Evidence-Based Treatment Optimization and Outcome Prediction, a project grant focused on heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Mayo Clinic will develop therapeutic discovery and biomarker prediction models for HFPEF patients through two integrated research strategies. First, the recipient will conduct drug screening to identify therapeutic benefits from existing guideline-directed medical therapy and non-GDMT drug combinations for HFPEF, combining drug-target predictions with EHR-based emulated trials to assess changes in mortality and morbidity endpoints. Second, Mayo Clinic will develop biomarker response prediction models using temporal coherence and intra-visit relationships within electronic health record data, learning stratified phenogroups and building personalized biomarker response prediction models for each group. The recipient plans to validate models and outputs through collaboration with Florida State University using the One-Florida+ EHR network via PCORnet, comparing results against Mayo Clinic EHR data. Place of performance is Rochester, Minnesota. The period of performance extends from August 1, 2026, through April 30, 2031.
