This Project Grant award from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), under CFDA Program 93.865 - Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research, will fund a $718,848 study titled "BUILDING RELATIONSHIP, IMPROVING DIALOGUE, AND GROWING EMPATHY (BRIDGE): AN INTERVENTION TO SUPPORT DECISION-MAKING FOR CRITICALLY ILL CHILDREN". The 5-year study, starting August 1, 2025, aims to test the impact of the BRIDGE intervention on decision-making and communication quality for parents of critically ill children under 2 years old who are facing decisions about life-sustaining treatment. The study will enroll up to 300 parents at 3 sites, randomizing them to receive either the BRIDGE intervention or usual care. Outcome measures will assess preparedness for decision-making, decisional conflict, shared decision-making, and communication quality. The project will also evaluate the intervention's impact on parent decisional regret and self-efficacy, as well as characterize clinician-perceived barriers and facilitators to BRIDGE implementation.
