This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) will fund a 30-year longitudinal study on transitions to adulthood and intergenerational mobility of income in the Kagera region of Tanzania. The $591,519 award to the University of Maryland, College Park will support data collection from the original 3,000 child participants and their 8,500 children, tracking factors such as education, location, marriage, fertility, and consumption over time. The research will analyze the degree of intergenerational transmission of education and consumption, as well as the transition to adulthood process, in order to identify gaps in support that could prevent young adults from escaping poverty. The project will leverage an existing long-term panel dataset and leverage the team's experience in survey design and administration, migration, and household formation.
