The University of Southern California (USC) received a $456,133 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), funded under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865). The grant, awarded on August 1, 2024, supports a multimethod research study to characterize gastrointestinal (GI) disorder trajectories and develop predictive models of GI symptom profiles and treatment response for autistic subgroups. The study aims to: 1) qualitatively describe autistic individuals' GI experiences through interviews, 2) quantitatively analyze GI symptom data from electronic health records of 7,478 autistic children and youth, and 3) build predictive models using both traditional and machine learning approaches. The research findings have the potential to contribute to a personalized medicine approach for managing GI disorders in the autistic population. This grant award leverages USC's expertise in areas such as engineering, health sciences, and data science to address critical gaps in understanding GI challenges faced by autistic individuals across the lifespan.
