Project Grant R01HD114624
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) provides $412,500.00 in funding to the University of South Florida (USF) to conduct a longitudinal study of gut dysbiosis in anemic preterm infants. The goal is to determine the hematocrit threshold associated with gut microbiome changes and how anemia development influences the microbiome and host interactions...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865), will support a clinical trial to prevent linear growth stunting and malnutrition in impoverished children from a low-income country. The project aims to determine if treating small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in Bangladeshi infants under ideal conditions (frequent screening and treatment) can improve...
- This $659,035 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), part of the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865), supports research on the role of thyroid hormone as a key regulator of neurodevelopment during early life iron deficiency. The grant aims to investigate the mechanistic basis for the interactions between iron and thyroid hormone during brain development. The research will focus on how...
- This $699,518 Project Grant award from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865), supports the development of a platform encapsulation technology for stabilizing probiotic strains in powders with high water activity. The goal is to improve the delivery and efficacy of probiotics for preventing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants. The awardee,...
- This Project Grant award from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865), provides $167,400.00 to Brigham & Women's Hospital Inc. to conduct research on the effects of maternal micronutrient supplementation during lactation on infant neurodevelopment. The key objectives are to: 1) Determine if maternal multiple micronutrient supplementation during lactation...
- This $164,484 Project Grant award from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (CFDA 93.865 - Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research) supports research by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Inc. to study the role of placental NAD and its effect on the onset of labor, with a focus on understanding the mechanisms regulating preterm birth. The key objectives are to: 1) Define the disposition of NAD+ and its precursors across the...
- This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) under the CFDA 93.226 Research on Healthcare Costs, Quality and Outcomes program is funding the development and testing of a clinical decision support (CDS) tool to improve iron deficiency screening and management for pregnant individuals at high risk of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). Specifically, the $118,089 award will support a two-phase project at Massachusetts...
- This $163,145 Project Grant awarded on August 7, 2025 by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research Program (CFDA 93.865), aims to address critical questions pertaining to impaired placentation associated with fetal growth restriction (FGR). The principal investigator, a pediatric and fetal surgeon, will use this 5-year award to develop unique cross-disciplinary skills and...
- This $160,056 Project Grant awarded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865), aims to optimize antibiotic use and improve understanding of developmental pharmacokinetics in newborn infants. The key objectives are to: (1) quantify maternal antibiotic concentrations (ampicillin, gentamicin, vancomycin, clindamycin) in maternal and umbilical cord blood; and (2) perform...
- The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research Federal Grant Program (CFDA 93.865), awarded a $1,463,500 Project Grant to The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to conduct a randomized controlled trial of an agricultural livelihood intervention to improve maternal and newborn health and nutrition in Kenya. The grant, awarded on January 17, 2025, will fund a...
This $689,134 Project Grant was awarded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) on August 7, 2025. The grant will fund a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized study to evaluate the efficacy of the probiotic Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v (LP299v) in optimizing iron status and reducing the incidence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) among 200 pregnant women at risk of IDA. The study will be conducted by the University of Illinois and is scheduled for completion by July 31, 2030. Participants will receive either LP299v or a placebo supplement twice daily along with a standard prenatal iron supplement starting from 10-16 weeks gestation until labor. The key objectives are to assess whether LP299v can improve hemoglobin and other iron status parameters and lower rates of IDA compared to placebo.
