The National Eye Institute (NEI) has awarded a $623,090 federal Project Grant (CFDA 93.867 - Vision Research) to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) to develop and validate a wide-field visible-light optical coherence tomography (WF-VIS-OCT) system for evaluating the oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) disease model in rats. The key objectives are to: 1) develop the WF-VIS-OCT device with high-resolution, wide-field imaging capabilities optimized for the rat eye; 2) create deep learning-based methods to quantify retinal blood flow, oxygen saturation, and vascular changes using the WF-VIS-OCT data; and 3) longitudinally evaluate the OIR model using the new WF-VIS-OCT biomarkers, including assessing the impact of high oxygen exposure and anti-VEGF therapy. If successful, this project will advance in vivo assessment capabilities for preclinical studies of ischemic retinal diseases like retinopathy of prematurity and diabetic retinopathy, which commonly use the OIR model.
