The National Eye Institute (NEI) awarded a $634,731 Project Grant under the Vision Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.867) to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) to develop retinal delivery of rexinoids as sustainable-released microparticles (UAB126-MP and UAB30-MP) for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy (DR). This 4-year project aims to activate the retinoid X receptor (RXR) in the retina to normalize lipid metabolism and correct neurovascular defects associated with DR. The study will utilize mouse models and cell cultures to investigate the physiological effects, cellular mechanisms, and molecular pathways underlying RXR-based therapy for DR. UAB has subcontracted portions of the work to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and Virginia Commonwealth University to leverage their expertise in specific research areas. The overall goal is to establish rexinoids as a potential long-term, targeted therapy to prevent and reverse the progression of DR.
