- Federal Project Grant Award Summary Brigham & Women's Hospital Inc. received a $2.47 million Project Grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847), effective September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2029. This award supports the development of a novel, kidney-draining lymph node (KLN)-targeted nanotherapeutic to treat crescentic glomerulonephritis (CGN), a...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Children's Hospital Corporation (Boston Children's Hospital) $133,500 on July 6, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate integrin αVβ6-mediated activation of latent TGF-β2 in kidney fibrosis. The research will test the hypothesis that integrin αVβ6-mediated TGF-β2 activation drives renal fibrosis and represents a potential therapeutic...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Tufts Medical Center Parent, Inc. (doing business as Tufts Medical Center) $133,875 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The project grant funds an evaluation of how estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline influences clinical practice patterns of medication withdrawal in heart failure patients. The research addresses a significant...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Massachusetts General Hospital $251,626 on April 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct basic research on c-kit receptor signaling in kidney collecting duct function. The research investigates the role of c-kit receptor signaling in modulating collecting duct epithelial cell composition and function. The project uses c-kit "sash" mice...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Vanderbilt University Medical Center $866,265 on May 13, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate non-canonical ephrin B2 receptor (EPHB2) signaling in acute kidney injury and its progression to chronic kidney disease. The research examines how EPHB2 and transforming growth factor beta signaling pathways contribute to kidney inflammation and...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The General Hospital Corporation $561,565 on July 30, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a Project Grant (R01DK145514) investigating the molecular mechanisms by which testican-2 protects against chronic kidney disease. The award funds research establishing the protective effect of circulating testican-2 in clinically relevant kidney disease...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Brigham and Women's Hospital $881,680 on August 21, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and validate a risk prediction model for proteinuria associated with vascular endothelial growth factor signaling pathway inhibitor (VSPI) therapy. The research aims to identify clinical, biochemical, and genetic risk factors that predict high-grade proteinuria...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Brigham & Women's Hospital Inc. $133,220 on August 17, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to conduct an ancillary study characterizing the burden and nature of 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11βHSD2) insufficiency in people with diabetes at risk for chronic kidney disease. The study examines how cortisol-mediated mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) activation contributes to chronic kidney...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The General Hospital Corporation (Massachusetts General Hospital) $749,727 on August 5, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate parathyroid hormone receptor signaling in podocyte injury and chronic kidney disease progression. The funded research will define the pathological role of PTH/PTH1R signaling in podocyte injury, elucidate underlying...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Brigham and Women's Hospital Inc. $193,776 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to identify cytokine biomarkers that predict response to IL-23 p19 inhibitor therapies for inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The research will quantify cytokines related to IL-23 signaling in serum and inflamed...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Brigham and Women's Hospital $910,287 on August 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate cellular communication between T follicular helper (TFH) cells and kidney proximal tubule epithelial cells (PTECs) in kidney allografts. The research examines how bidirectional signaling between TFH cells and PTECs creates feedback loops that drive kidney allograft rejection. The study uses fate-mapping and reporter strains in murine kidney transplantation models to identify kidney microniches promoting TFH reprogramming, assess the role of epithelial-derived signals in TFH differentiation, and determine how TFH-derived cytokines promote PTEC activation and injury. Findings will be validated using human kidney biopsy specimens and gene perturbation studies. The expected outcome is to establish new strategies to prevent and treat kidney allograft rejection by clarifying the fundamental mechanisms TFH and PTEC use to promote disease. Brigham and Women's Hospital, a subsidiary of Partners Healthcare System Incorporated based in Boston, Massachusetts, is the recipient. Performance occurs in Boston, MA. The period of performance extends from August 1, 2026, through April 30, 2030.
