The research addresses the incompletely understood...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Augusta University Research Institute, Inc. $645,382 on March 1, 2026, to investigate the role of netrin-1 in polycystic kidney disease progression under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The research addresses mechanisms of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), which causes fluid-filled cysts in kidney tubules and progression to end-stage renal...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded a cooperative agreement totaling $803,534 to the University of Washington on September 15, 2025, to establish the Polycystic Kidney Disease In Vitro Center (PKD-INVENT) under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). PKD-INVENT will expand the preclinical-to-clinical research pathway for polycystic kidney disease by developing and providing human PKD organoids and related...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health within the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Children's Research Institute $156,814 on August 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to support Project Grant K08DK149197. The award funds research defining immunomodulatory mechanisms in autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD), a severe...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $191,700 on January 11, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate how membrane lipids mediate ciliary signaling in polycystic kidney disease. The research addresses the role of phosphatidylserine, a membrane lipid, in regulating the polycystin complex within the primary cilium. Mutations...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center $124,842 under Project Grant F31DK146691 on June 19, 2026, to fund research into the role of interferon gamma in injury-accelerated cystic kidney disease. The award supports basic biomedical research examining how kidney injury promotes rapid progression of polycystic kidney disease (PKD) in patients with mutations in cilia-related genes. The investigator will test the...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded a cooperative agreement to Mayo Clinic on September 22, 2025, for $561,335 to establish and operate the Mayo Clinic Polycystic Kidney Disease Research Core Center (MPRC), which provides reagents, biological materials, phenotyping data, and expertise to the polycystic kidney disease research community through the PKD-Research Resource Consortium. The MPRC operates three cores. The Human ADPKD Population and Materials...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded a Cooperative Agreement totaling $611,688 to Weill Medical College of Cornell University on September 12, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop an AI-based image phenotyping core for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) research. The recipient will establish a biomedical research core that comprehensively labels and annotates...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute, Inc. $334,627 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to support basic research on autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) cystogenesis. The research targets the sodium-potassium-ATPase (NKA) and its interaction with ouabain, a circulating endogenous compound that the award recipient's prior work identified as a novel promoter of renal cyst development in ADPKD. The recipient's earlier studies demonstrated that NKA in epithelial cells from ADPKD cysts has abnormally high affinity for ouabain, and that ouabain binding triggers signaling pathways stimulating cell proliferation, cell de-differentiation, and cAMP-dependent fluid secretion that drives microcyst growth and cyst-like dilation formation in ADPKD mouse models. This award funds the development of a pharmacological approach to block ouabain-driven ADPKD cystogenesis, with the goal of identifying a safe and effective treatment for the disease. Period of performance runs through May 31, 2030. Work is performed at the recipient's Kansas City, Kansas facility.
