Grant Award Summary New York University School of Medicine received a $771,043 Project Grant award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) effective March 15, 2026, with a completion date of December 31, 2030. The award funds a hybrid Type II implementation-effectiveness trial conducted in partnership with a peer-led organization in Los Angeles, California, an Ending the HIV Epidemic priority jurisdiction. The primary research product is a randomized controlled trial of the LINKED intervention (Leveraging Interpersonal Networks to Keep Engagement in PrEP & MOUD), a social network-based peer intervention designed to increase uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) among people who inject drugs (PWID). The study will enroll 372 PWID participants and evaluate intervention effectiveness and implementation outcomes using the EPIS (Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, and Sustainment) and RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance) frameworks. The research deliverables include longitudinal mixed-methods data collection with follow-up assessments at 6 and 12 months post-intervention, booster sessions at 21 and 42 days, and iterative refinement of implementation strategies. Primary outcome measures will assess confirmed PrEP and/or MOUD uptake and persistence at both individual and network levels. All study participants will receive opioid overdose prevention education and resources as part of standard services, generating evidence on the effectiveness of peer-driven social network diffusion strategies to address persistently low medication uptake among PWID.
