This Project Grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, provides $738,086 to Brown University under the Drug Abuse and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to evaluate a technology-assisted parenting intervention for adolescents in residential substance use treatment. Specifically, the funding supports a randomized controlled trial to test the effectiveness of Parent SMART, a mobile app and telehealth coaching program that delivers the evidence-based Parenting Wisely computerized intervention to parents. Parent SMART aims to improve parenting skills and reduce adolescent substance use and problem behaviors by providing parents access to an expert network, peer support from other parents, and tailored coaching during and after their child's short-term residential treatment. Outcome data will be collected at 6, 12 and 24 weeks post-discharge to examine impacts on parenting practices, adolescent substance use and related issues. If successful, the scalable Parent SMART model could advance care for this high-need population during a critical treatment period.
