The project...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded Oregon Health & Science University $1,042,004 on March 26, 2026, under the Cancer Biology Research program (CFDA 93.396) to develop a microphysiological bone metastasis-on-a-chip platform that models prostate cancer metastasis into vascularized and innervated bone tissue. The research platform incorporates a mineralized, osteocyte-embedded bone matrix supporting active osteoclast and osteoblast remodeling, perfusable pericyte-supported vasculature to...
- The National Cancer Institute, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Oregon Health & Science University $216,822 on September 1, 2026, under the Cancer Biology Research program (CFDA 93.396) to define the PARP14 interactome in RIG-I activated colorectal cancers. The research explores how RIG-I, a cellular RNA sensor, activates immune responses against colorectal cancer when triggered by synthetic viral RNA nucleic acids. Preliminary studies show that PARP14...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded Oregon Health & Science University $1.312 million on July 10, 2026, under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) to develop a patient-derived intestinal organoid system modeling gastrointestinal toxicity associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors used in cancer treatment. The funded work will develop air-liquid interface organoid cultures preserving epithelial and immune components from human colon mucosa to model immune-related adverse...
- The National Cancer Institute, a component of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Providence Health & Services – Oregon $1,431,420 on May 1, 2026, under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) to conduct spatiotemporal molecular elucidation of radiation-induced tumor microenvironment remodeling to enhance immunotherapy in head and neck cancer. The award funds research into neoadjuvant immunoradiotherapy combining checkpoint inhibition with hypofractionated...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded Oregon Health & Science University $638,532 on July 10, 2026, under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) to conduct research on antigen immunodominance in regulation of anti-tumor CD8 T cell immunity and immunotherapy response. The research establishes antigen immunodominance as a novel therapeutic axis for predicting, modulating, and exploiting CD8 T cell responses to cancer. Cancer immunotherapies that activate CD8 T cells show promise...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded Oregon Health & Science University $640,113 on June 1, 2026, under the Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Research program (CFDA 93.394) to develop multifunctional ultrasound-responsive nanoparticles (URNs) for improved immunotherapy of melanoma. The project addresses the challenge that approximately 50 percent of melanoma patients do not respond to immune checkpoint inhibitor therapies due to immunosuppressive tumor microenvironments. The funded work...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) received a $2.27 million Project Grant from the National Cancer Institute under the Cancer Biology Research program (CFDA 93.396) effective September 23, 2025, with an anticipated completion date of August 31, 2029. This research initiative investigates the role of androgen receptor (AR) signaling in conventional dendritic cells (CDCs) and its impact on anti-tumor immune function, with particular focus on sex-based...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded Oregon Health & Science University $356,850 on April 1, 2026, under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) to support research on targeting YB-1 to overcome chemoresistance in ovarian cancer. The project addresses treatment resistance in recurrent ovarian cancer by developing and evaluating a novel therapeutic approach to inhibit Y-box binding protein 1 (YB-1), a stress-responsive protein implicated in ovarian cancer progression and...
- The National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute awarded Oregon Health & Science University $638,915 on September 1, 2026, under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) to develop HUMARROW, a primary cell model of acute myeloid leukemia and normal bone marrow designed to accelerate translational research. The award supports the creation and characterization of patient-derived cellular models that enable more efficient preclinical testing of AML therapeutics and...
The National Cancer Institute, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Oregon Health & Science University $657,007 on August 1, 2026, under the Cancer Biology Research program (CFDA 93.396) to develop a multiscale approach to controlling cellular interactions in premalignant tissues. The project aims to use physical science methods to manipulate interactions between multiple cell types in precancerous tissues to restore normal tissue function. The recipient will combine analytical tools that elucidate molecular characteristics of individual cells and their spatiotemporal responses to signals with bioprinting approaches that enable precise placement of individual cells in vitro. OHSU will develop mathematical models and computational infrastructure to organize this information, model behavior of diseased tissues, predict responses to perturbations, and identify key interactions amenable to manipulation. The ultimate deliverable is dynamic, multidrug treatments that control intercellular interactions to change the form and function of precancerous tissues and halt disease progression at early stages. The period of performance runs from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2031, with place of performance in Portland, Oregon. This is a Project Grant (R01 mechanism).
