- The National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute awarded Vanderbilt University Medical Center $695,884 on June 23, 2026, under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) to investigate selective loss of HLA gene products in triple-negative breast cancer immunobiology. The research examines how tumor cells evade immune checkpoint inhibition through downregulation or deletion of MHC-I (major histocompatibility complex I) expression. Preliminary data from the recipient's...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded Vanderbilt University $119,735 on January 15, 2026, under the Cancer Research Manpower program (CFDA 93.398) to support research on neutrophil-driven pro-recurrent niche formation in mammary adipose tissue following radiation therapy for triple negative breast cancer. The research tests the hypothesis that neutrophils facilitate formation of a pro-recurrent niche in irradiated mammary adipose tissue through release of pro-inflammatory proteins and...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded the University of Tennessee Health Science Center $389,215 on August 25, 2026, under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) to develop selective N-glycan biosynthesis inhibitors targeting metastatic triple-negative breast cancer. The research employs structure-guided medicinal chemistry to optimize DPAGT1 (dolichyl-phosphate N-acetylglucosaminephosphotransferase 1) inhibitors, the first committed enzyme in N-glycan biosynthesis. The project...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded $400,000 to Toomer Therapeutics, Inc. on September 2, 2026, under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) to develop small-molecule inhibitors of the E3 ubiquitin ligase ARIH1 as a targeted therapy for triple-negative breast cancer and other cancers. The project focuses on lead compound optimization, absorption-distribution-metabolism-excretion and pharmacokinetic studies to generate drug-like ARIH1 inhibitors, and preclinical efficacy studies of...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded the University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute, Inc. $398,544 on April 8, 2026, under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) to conduct pre-clinical evaluation of a highly selective SMARCA2 degrader in therapy-resistant triple-negative breast cancer. The research addresses mechanisms of resistance to neoadjuvant systemic therapy in triple-negative breast cancer patients with residual disease. The project leverages the recipient's...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded $668,878 to the University of Texas at Austin on April 3, 2026, under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) to develop novel antibody-drug conjugates targeting CD44 variant 9 for advanced and treatment-resistant breast cancer. The research addresses the clinical need for new therapeutic options for patients with triple-negative and heavily treated hormone receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer who have relapsed or progressed after current...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded Texas A&M University System Health Science Center a $327,250 cooperative agreement on July 3, 2026, under the Cancer Cause and Prevention Research program (CFDA 93.393) to identify natural products targeting castration-resistant prostate cancer driven by androgen receptor splice variants, particularly AR-V7. During the UG3 phase, the recipient will miniaturize and transfer optimized phenotypic assays into a 1536-well format, establish robust cell-line...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded Vanderbilt University $101,838 on December 26, 2025, under the Cancer Research Manpower program (CFDA 93.398) to support biomedical training in cancer research. The award funds development of novel anti-EGFR peptides as therapeutic candidates for non-small cell lung cancer, colorectal cancer, head and neck squamous cell carcinomas, and glioblastomas. The project integrates protein modeling and peptide design methods with experimental screening to generate...
- The National Cancer Institute awarded Vanderbilt University $709,630 under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) on July 1, 2026, to develop and evaluate a novel combination therapy for BCG-refractory and BCG-recurrent non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. The research combines intravesical delivery of oncolytic reovirus and immune checkpoint inhibitors with targeted internal radiation therapy using the sodium/iodide symporter to render bladder cancer cells susceptible to radioactive...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded Natsar Pharmaceuticals, Inc. a $1.63 million Project Grant under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) on September 22, 2025, for the development of RK-33, a small molecule inhibitor targeting DDX3 (DEAD-box helicase 3) as a therapeutic candidate for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The grant supports drug development activities through August 31, 2027, advancing a rationally designed compound that has...
The National Cancer Institute awarded Vanderbilt University Medical Center $400,313 on September 1, 2026, under the Cancer Treatment Research program (CFDA 93.395) to evaluate the AR antagonist darolutamide combined with standard-of-care therapy in triple-negative breast cancer patients, specifically those with the luminal androgen receptor subtype characterized by greater than 80 percent AR positivity by immunohistochemistry. The project addresses a significant clinical gap: the LAR subtype, comprising approximately 15–20 percent of triple-negative breast cancer cases, demonstrates resistance to standard chemo-immunotherapy and has not benefited from prior AR antagonist trials. The recipient will conduct a neoadjuvant window clinical trial in early-stage, AR-positive triple-negative breast cancer patients, assessing Ki-67 changes, pathologic complete response, and survival outcomes. In parallel, the project will develop and validate a novel QRT-PCR LAR gene signature to improve patient stratification, and develop preclinical organoid models of androgen antagonist-resistant LAR triple-negative breast cancer to identify biomarkers of response and resistance. The work is performed in Forest Hills, Tennessee. The project period runs September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2031. This is a Project Grant, the standard assistance type for individual research investigations within the NCI portfolio.
