- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Emory University $100,228 on September 30, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct spatial analysis of long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (LAI-PrEP) service availability across the United States. The project, titled SAGE PREP (Spatial Availability and Geospatial Exploration of Injectable PrEP Services), integrates clinic location data from an expanded PREP Locator...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of Pittsburgh $814,507 on September 2, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to characterize HIV-1 reservoir dynamics and immune responses in individuals who acquire HIV-1 while on pre-exposure prophylaxis. The research compares two populations: 20 individuals who acquired HIV-1 while on PrEP (such as long-acting cabotegravir) and 40 individuals who initiated antiretroviral...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Emory University $1.273 million on June 2, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct the MISTR+ study, which develops and tests low-touch interventions to improve telehealth HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) initiation, retention, and re-engagement outcomes among over 100,000 users of telemedicine PrEP services. The project will develop a series of evidence-based, low-cost...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded The University of Chicago $252,870 on September 16, 2025, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to support a patient-oriented research program on clinical informatics for HIV prevention and care. The award funds two research aims focused on incorporating patient-reported data into clinical informatics tools. Aim 1 pilots the implementation of electronic patient-reported sexual health data into...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Emory University $100,228 on October 10, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct natural language processing analysis of social media discussions about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The research uses NLP to extract user-generated posts about PrEP from ten years of Google and Reddit data, identifying public inquiries and concerns about initiating or continuing the medication. The...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Research Triangle Institute (RTI International) $719,107 on September 2, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to evaluate a multilevel intervention addressing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) barriers for women in Georgia. RTI will compare the combined efficacy of provider PrEP training and the SavvyHer mobile application—designed to help women make decisions about using PrEP—against...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded The Johns Hopkins University $696,200 on May 12, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct the OPAL Study, a pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic investigation of emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (F/TDF) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) dosing regimens in women across the lifespan. The award funds research to evaluate whether a 2-2-2 event-driven F/TDF dosing regimen...
- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) at the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health awarded the University of Illinois $811,740 on August 14, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to conduct a hybrid type 2 site-randomized, cluster wait-list controlled trial testing a nurse-developed, three-session group intervention designed to improve HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake and...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded The Johns Hopkins University $691,288 on July 6, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct the PREP Optimization in Women via Event-Driven Regimens (POWER) study, a pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic investigation of emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (F/TDF) pre-exposure prophylaxis in women receiving exogenous hormone therapy. The study quantifies F/TDF drug...
- The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded Boston Medical Center Corporation $2,066,706 on August 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop and test systems for integrating pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) prescriptions into hospital inpatient workflows as a HIV prevention strategy for people who use drugs. The award funds PREP-TALK, a project that addresses the gap between the proven efficacy of PrEP and its confinement to outpatient settings, where...
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded The University of Chicago $853,906 on September 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct research on same-day pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) initiation in emergency department settings. The research addresses a critical gap in HIV prevention: while PrEP is highly effective, uptake remains low among people at risk, particularly those with limited access to outpatient care. Emergency departments serve populations disproportionately affected by HIV and socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals. Prior pilot work by the research team identified barriers to PrEP uptake in EDs, including low awareness among patients and limited knowledge among ED physicians on how to initiate PrEP. The team's preliminary studies found that although many ED patients expressed interest in PrEP, the majority referred to follow-up PrEP appointments failed to attend, indicating significant attrition in the care continuum. Same-day PrEP initiation has improved uptake rates in non-ED clinical settings but has not been rigorously studied in the ED environment, where time and resource constraints pose unique implementation challenges. This project will investigate how to effectively implement same-day PrEP initiation in emergency departments. Work is performed in Chicago, Illinois. The award runs through March 31, 2031.
