The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) at the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health awarded the University of Illinois $811,740 on August 14, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to conduct a hybrid type 2 site-randomized, cluster wait-list controlled trial testing a nurse-developed, three-session group intervention designed to improve HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake and sustained use among women in Ending the HIV Epidemic jurisdictions. The intervention addresses barriers to PrEP access and adherence stemming from financial hardship and suboptimal conditions of daily life—including inadequate housing, employment instability, and limited access to services—that impede women's progression from PrEP awareness through sustained use. The study enrolls 300 women across six community sites and applies the transtheoretical model to guide participants through stages of change from contemplation and preparation to action and maintenance. Preliminary data from Chicago pilot sites demonstrated feasibility and acceptability. The trial integrates biomedical prevention strategies with meaningful community partnerships and seamless health transitions, departing from traditional education and referral approaches that have shown limited effectiveness. Work is performed in Chicago, Illinois, with a performance period extending through January 31, 2031.
