This federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855), provides $1,542,980.00 to support research on the impact of gender-affirming hormone therapy on HIV viral dynamics and immune responses in transgender women. The research project aims to explore three key areas: 1) the effect of estradiol therapy on measures of the HIV reservoir, including size, activity, intactness, integration site, and clonality; 2) the impact of HIV and hormone therapy on immune cell profiles and inflammatory biomarkers; and 3) the effect of hormone therapy on metabolic features in the plasma proteome and cellular energy dependence. This work will leverage two unique cohorts of transgender women, including an existing cross-sectional cohort and participants from a clinical trial initiating estrogen therapy, to comprehensively assess the interplay between gender-affirming hormone use, HIV infection, and immunological/virological outcomes. The project is being led by The Johns Hopkins University, with a sub-award to the University of California, San Diego, and is scheduled for completion by March 2025.
