The University of Notre Dame DU Lac was awarded a $1,541,024 Project Grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855). The grant, titled "Spore Germination Pathway in Clostridioides Difficile and Its Pharmacological Intervention," aims to elucidate the process of spore germination in Clostridioides difficile, a deadly anaerobic bacterium that causes recurrent infections in patients treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics. The research project has three specific aims: 1) to further understand the details of the spore-germination pathway, 2) to demonstrate that inhibition of spore germination is key to preventing recurrence of C. difficile infection, and 3) to develop pharmacological interventions to inhibit spore germination and interrupt the cycle of recurrent infections. This research has the potential to address a significant public health challenge, as C. difficile infection is the deadliest of the five bacterial urgent threats in the United States.
