Project Grant R01AG099754
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Miami $164,766 on September 5, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct research on T cell senescence-driven immune dysfunction in aging and HIV. The research will establish a complete T cell senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) atlas using fluorescence-activated cell sorting and mass spectrometry, then evaluate plasma biomarkers of T cell senescence during physiologic aging and in people with HIV. The...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Illinois $3,781,063 on August 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to adapt and test the Fit & Strong evidence-based physical activity intervention for older women living with HIV experiencing mobility decline. The funded work adapts a strength-training, balance, and behavior-change program to address HIV-specific physical, psychosocial, and contextual needs of women aged 50 years and older. The study employs a...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded $450,928 to the University of Connecticut on June 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct secondary data analysis characterizing phenotypes of chronic disease among people aging with HIV in the United States. The project applies a syndemic framework to examine how multiple co-occurring health conditions cluster and interact under conditions of social and structural adversity, with the goal of identifying disease burden patterns...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Northwestern University $794,664 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on July 15, 2026, to investigate senescence-associated pathways in people living with HIV who experience premature aging. The research targets novel mechanisms of healthy aging in HIV by examining senescence-associated glycan-degrading enzymes (β-galactosidase and sialidase) that degrade anti-inflammatory glycans on circulating glycoproteins, disrupting pathways that inhibit...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded $422,125 to the University of Miami on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to conduct a randomized, waitlist-controlled mechanistic trial characterizing how auricular vagus nerve stimulation modulates HIV-associated peripheral neuropathy in aging adults. The study enrolls 70 adults aged 50 and older with chronic HIV-associated...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the University of Washington $699,750 on May 7, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to adapt and evaluate the "Do More, Feel Better" behavioral activation intervention for older people living with HIV who experience depression and have limited access to professional mental health care. The project addresses a documented gap: older people living with HIV (age 50 and above) represent more than half of the...
- The Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health Office of the Director awarded the University of Miami $153,500 on September 1, 2026, under the Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310) to conduct research targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome as a therapeutic link between HIV-1 infection and ischemic stroke. The research employs both in vivo and in vitro approaches to test the hypothesis that HIV-1-induced activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome aggravates ischemic...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Massachusetts General Hospital $1,732,063 on February 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a longitudinal study measuring the prevalence, classification, and pathophysiologic contributors to mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias among older people living with HIV in Uganda, with comparison to demographically similar HIV-uninfected controls. The research involves comprehensive...
- The National Institute on Aging, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Tulane University $874,974 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to study the effects of CSF1R blockade on brain aging and HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder using a macaque model. The project examines how neuroinflammation, myeloid dysregulation, and blood-brain barrier decline drive cognitive impairment in aging and HIV infection. The research uses a macaque model...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Vanderbilt University Medical Center $519,500 on May 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to examine epigenetic age acceleration and differences among immune cell populations in people with and without HIV. The research uses cryopreserved peripheral blood mononuclear cell samples and existing detailed cellular and clinical outcome data from 140 individuals (35 younger, ages 30–39, and 105 older, ages 50 and above) with and without...
The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Miami $783,407 on August 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a randomized controlled trial of a health promotion intervention for older adults with HIV and documented cardiovascular risk. The study, titled "Strengthening Hearts and Minds: A Health Promotion Strategy for Older Adults with HIV," will enroll 180 adults age 50 and older and randomize them to either the HOPE (Happy Older People Are Engaged) health promotion intervention (n=90) or a psychoeducation control (n=90). The research addresses the growing population of people living with HIV age 50 and older, who face elevated risks of cardiovascular disease, depression, and anxiety. The study will assess cardiovascular risk, mental health, and HIV-related outcomes at baseline, immediately post-intervention, and at six- and twelve-month follow-up. Primary aims include comparing the efficacy of HOPE versus control in reducing cardiovascular risk and improving mental health and HIV-related outcomes in this population, and examining mediators of intervention effects. The recipient, the University of Miami's Office of Research Administration—School of Medicine Division, will perform work in Miami, Florida. The period of performance runs from August 15, 2026, through July 31, 2031. The award is a Project Grant, the standard assistance type for NIH research awards.
