The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Pennsylvania $687,395 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct research enhancing online privacy protection and reducing scam risk for older adults with dementia and their care partners. The project investigates how people living with cognitive impairment, including mild cognitive impairment and mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, and their care partners are exposed to targeted advertising and online scams during routine web browsing. The research has two primary aims. First, the team will collect and categorize advertising for dementia treatments (both FDA-regulated and unregulated) and misleading advertisements for low-value or fraudulent health and financial products using a web browser plug-in and device software, then compare exposure levels between participants and anonymous browsers on the same websites to measure the effect of behavioral targeting. Second, the team will conduct qualitative interviews with 20 to 30 people living with cognitive impairment and their care partners (40 to 60 interviews total) recruited from the Penn Memory Center to understand the dyad's knowledge of internet privacy issues and their perceptions of what drives adoption of privacy-increasing interventions. Performance takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The award runs through June 30, 2031.
