Project Grant R01AG096300
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Trustees of Indiana University $674,455 on September 3, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to create the first longitudinal platform tracking home health agency ownership linked to health outcomes for people living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The project will build a data infrastructure addressing a documented research gap: while six million Medicare beneficiaries rely on home health agencies annually and people living...
- The National Institute on Aging, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded $691,306 to Trustees of Indiana University (Indiana University Indianapolis) on August 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866). The award funds research integrating real-world evidence from electronic medical records, cell line assays, and single-cell omics via deep reinforcement learning to identify repurposable drugs for Alzheimer's disease treatment. The project applies deep transfer...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Trustees of Indiana University (doing business as Indiana University Indianapolis) $791,039 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to develop computational methods enabling patient-centered prognostic profiling for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias that accounts for individual cognitive resilience in response to neuropathological changes. The work will model each patient's distinct connectome architecture and cognitive...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded $431,996 to the Trustees of Indiana University, doing business as Indiana University Indianapolis, on September 20, 2025, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to develop and deliver INSPIRE (Investigating Neurosciences, A Summer Program to Ignite Research and Education), an immersive summer research education program designed to attract and retain undergraduate science majors pursuing careers in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias research....
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Trustees of Indiana University $433,593 on July 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to integrate Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Medicare fee-for-service and Medicare Advantage inpatient data to improve hospital quality, outcomes, and disparities measurement. The project addresses a measurement gap created by Medicare Advantage enrollment growth to 55 percent of beneficiaries with Medicare Parts A and B coverage. Despite this...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Northwestern University $1,341,808 on February 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct longitudinal research on aging-in-place and long-term care decision-making among older adults with Alzheimer's dementia. The research extends a current cohort study (R01AG058777) of 293 older adults with a 94.5 percent retention rate. Northwestern will follow subjects every six months through 42 months with surveys examining how aging-in-place...
- The National Institute on Aging, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded the University of Notre Dame $582,492 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) for Project Grant R61AG104103, OPENCARE: Open-Source Infrastructure for Evaluating Conversational AI in Dementia Care. The recipient will develop and deliver two open-source research infrastructures to address the absence of technical evaluation standards for conversational AI in Alzheimer's...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Pennsylvania $198,164 on October 29, 2025, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to support an Individual National Research Service Award (NRSA) for predoctoral research training focused on dementia-friendly hospitalization practices and family caregiver inclusion. The award funds research training that enables the applicant, an acute care nurse and clinical nurse specialist, to develop competence in understanding the care of...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Indiana University Indianapolis $109,795 on August 20, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to evaluate amyloid dynamics and cerebral amyloid angiopathy burden. The project examines amyloid plaque redistribution and cerebral amyloid angiopathy development through genetic and pharmacological methods, and tests whether dietary and exercise interventions mitigate cerebral amyloid angiopathy burden. The research evaluates glial-based mechanisms...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Trustees of Indiana University $607,706 under Aging Research (CFDA 93.866) on March 1, 2026, to investigate short-term practice effects in subjective cognitive decline as markers of Alzheimer's disease progression and biomarker status. The project examines whether individuals with subjective cognitive decline demonstrate smaller short-term practice effects than cognitively normal peers, and whether these practice effects correlate with plasma biomarkers of...
The National Institute on Aging awarded Trustees of Indiana University $561,748 on September 2, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct the Study of Dementia Care Staff: Adaptation of Instruments for Multinational Research (SUSTAIN). The SUSTAIN project will adapt a U.S.-based survey and develop internationally validated measures for dementia care workers across four countries spanning three continents: the United States, Brazil, Switzerland, and Ghana. Aim 1 involves systematically translating and culturally adapting the National Dementia Workforce Study surveys for long-term care facility administrators and staff for multinational use. Aim 2 will field the adapted surveys with 600 dementia care workers (200 per country) and 60 administrators (20 per country) recruited from participating facilities. Aim 3 will validate the survey instrument and analyze responses to identify factors related to dementia care workers' knowledge, attitudes, practices, and intent to remain in their positions, comparing results within and across countries. The award supports research addressing the international staffing crisis in long-term care facilities where persons with dementia receive care. Building researcher capacity to investigate the dementia care workforce using common data elements will enable cross-national comparison of factors that influence workforce stability. Performance occurs in Indiana, with a period of performance from September 2, 2026, through June 30, 2031. The award is classified as a Project Grant, an assistance type under the National Institute on Aging's mission to support biomedical and behavioral research in aging.
