- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Memphis $146,000 on September 4, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate longitudinal patterns of multiple behavioral risk factors and their joint effects on cognitive aging. The recipient will analyze 24 years of data from the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative longitudinal survey of U.S. adults age 51 and older, linked with neighborhood contextual data, to examine how physical...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Memphis $365,000 on July 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a ten-year longitudinal study examining how cumulative information and communication technology use affects dementia risk among rural community-dwelling older adults. The study tracks information and communication technology use—including smartphones, computers, and internet access—and dementia incidence from 2015 through 2024 using data from the...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of California, Los Angeles $623,176 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct research on modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias among individuals aged 90 and older. The research triangulates evidence across four data sources—the LifeAfter90 Study (1,397 participants, all aged 90), the 90+ Study (1,630 participants, all aged 90), the Health and Retirement Study (3,359...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The Johns Hopkins University $581,090 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on September 1, 2026, to conduct the Joint Environment & Occupation Dementia Study (JEODE), a longitudinal investigation of combined environmental and occupational exposures as risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias and cognitive decline. The study uses data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study, a nationwide cohort of 9,204 Medicare...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $5,057,416 on September 15, 2025, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to examine the impact of undiagnosed dementia on healthcare utilization across geographic regions. The recipient will augment Medicare claims data with cognitive assessment data from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study, a longitudinal cohort of 30,239 participants from 1,833 counties across the...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The Washington University $406,707 on September 1, 2026, under the Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310) to conduct a national longitudinal study examining whether integrated dual-eligible special needs plans improve health outcomes for adults with intellectual disabilities and dementia who are dually enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid. The study addresses the absence of national research on dementia care access, quality, and outcomes among...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Drexel University $1,306,728 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on August 1, 2026, to conduct a longitudinal, multi-site study examining how individual lifestyle, social circumstances, and neighborhood-level factors influence physical functioning trajectories in older adults across population subgroups and U.S. regions. The research leverages over 30 years of longitudinal data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) cohort and...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Texas at Arlington $142,835 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a data-driven mixed-method study examining walkability and safety risk factors affecting older adults' street engagement. The project, titled "Data-Driven Discovery of Walkability: Safety Risk Factors and Responsive Behaviors of Older Adults," addresses gaps in age-friendly built infrastructure and current roadway design...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Wake Forest University Health Sciences $633,510 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to examine the impact of home-based medical care and telemedicine use on dementia care outcomes among Medicare enrollees with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The project will study home-based medical care delivery—house calls by physicians and advanced care providers—and telemedicine use among persons living with Alzheimer's...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The University of Chicago $597,239 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to support investigation of inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) utilization and outcomes for older adult patients with and without Alzheimer's disease or other dementias (ADRD). The research examines comparative value and appropriateness of care delivery across post-acute care settings, specifically comparing higher-cost IRF care—which provides acute...
The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Memphis $389,999 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on September 1, 2026, to conduct a longitudinal study examining how transportation disadvantage affects cognitive decline and dementia risk in older adults. The study uses data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study, an ongoing nationally representative panel of U.S. Medicare enrollees aged 65 and older, to accomplish three objectives: identify distinct trajectories of transportation disadvantage over time and their determinants; examine the longitudinal relationship between transportation disadvantage and incident dementia, quantifying how much transportation disadvantage contributes to dementia risk; and evaluate how personal transportation choices influence transportation disadvantage and dementia risk through scenario analyses. Transportation disadvantage is defined as unmet transportation needs and inadequate access to transportation due to barriers including distance, cost, physical limitations, or social and environmental factors. The award period runs through June 30, 2030, with work performed in Memphis, Tennessee.
