This Project Grant award of $3,558,527.00 from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research) aims to investigate the interaction between sex chromosomes, sex hormones, brain-derived hormones, and brain angiotensin II activation on accelerated brain aging and cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease. The award was granted to the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth and will fund a 5-year study with specific objectives to: 1) Determine the role of circulating hormones on modulating brain angiotensin II-associated oxidative stress and cognitive impairment, 2) Examine the role of brain-derived hormones on modulation of angiotensin II-associated oxidative stress and cognitive impairment, and 3) Determine the independent effects of sex hormones and sex chromosomes on angiotensin II-associated oxidative stress and cognitive impairment. The goal is to elucidate mechanisms underlying the observed sex differences in Alzheimer's disease risk, in which post-menopausal women are at the highest risk.
