The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded the University of Pittsburgh $248,858 on July 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to develop and test network interventions that increase adoption of evidence-based obesity prevention strategies among community coalitions serving low-income populations. The research addresses the 23–33 percent higher obesity prevalence among children from socioeconomically disadvantaged families compared to higher-income households. Community coalitions comprising public health, school, and community-based organization partners have demonstrated capacity to reduce childhood obesity using evidence-based strategies, yet coalition adoption of these strategies remains limited, particularly in high-poverty areas. The study employs systems science simulation to model how individual relationships and behavior change within coalition networks, then uses collaborative development with coalition leaders and modeling experts to design network interventions. Feasibility testing proceeds through a two-arm cluster-randomized controlled trial to evaluate deployment of network interventions aimed at accelerating evidence-based strategy adoption among coalitions working in socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. Performance occurs in Boston, Massachusetts, with a period of performance from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029. This is a project grant, the assistance type supporting investigator-initiated research at academic and research institutions.
