The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) awarded a $1,632,022 Project Grant to the University of Southern California (USC) for the "Southern California Superfund Research and Training Program for PFAS Assessment, Remediation, and Prevention (SHARP)" under the NIEHS Superfund Hazardous Substances Basic Research and Education program (CFDA 93.143). The overarching goal of this 5-year project is to develop scientific knowledge and innovative technologies to address per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in Superfund and other sites. The research program integrates biomedical and environmental engineering efforts across four highly interactive projects: (1) evaluating the effects of PFAS on liver disease and underlying molecular mechanisms; (2) conducting human longitudinal studies on PFAS exposure and liver disease; (3) developing novel PFAS characterization techniques and predictive groundwater models; and (4) advancing microbial, chemical, and thermal PFAS defluorination processes for improved remediation. The project is supported by four cores focused on community engagement, data management, research training, and administrative coordination to translate the research findings to key stakeholders.
