The Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration awarded Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) a $189.3 million project grant under the Federal Transit Capital Investment Grants program (CFDA 20.500). The grant funds a 7.8-mile light rail extension project known as the Red Line Extension and Reliability Improvements Project. The project will extend TriMet's existing MAX Red Line light rail transit line from Beaverton westward to Hillsboro, Oregon, including improvements to 12 existing stations. The grant will fund construction of additional track, station reconstruction, purchase of four new light rail vehicles, switch and signal work, an operator break facility, and a new storage track. The project aims to provide light rail service 19.5 hours daily with 7.5 minute frequencies. Completion is expected by May 2025. The grant represents 46.51% of the estimated $215 million total project costs, with the remainder provided by TriMet and Port of Portland matching funds.
