Description
Evidence-based programs to reduce alcohol and tobacco/nicotine substance use and enhance mental health awareness in youth ages 9-19. - the andrew county health and safety coalition, along with its key stakeholders and community partners, proposes a comprehensive prevention initiative to reduce substance use among youth ages 9 to 19 as well as enhance mental health awareness. This initiative will implement evidence-based programs such as too good for drugs (tgfd), guiding good choices, drug-free super S.T.A.R.s, how full is your cup, and catch my breath, along with implementation of a junior deputy program, across three school districts in andrew county, missouri. The three main school districts are the savannah r-3 district, north andrew, and avenue city. The initiatives will particularly focus on alcohol and tobacco/nicotine prevention. Leveraging robust community partnerships, the coalition seeks to address these challenges through education, awareness, and targeted interventions. The coalition will use state and local data to effectively inform and tailor the interventions and parents/caregivers will have the opportunity to participate in prevention efforts with their children. The proposed program will focus on educational initiatives that raise awareness about the dangers of substance use, the development of policies that limit access to substances, and the creation of safe, engaging environments that encourage healthy behaviors. The ultimate goal is to reduce substance use among young people in the community, thereby fostering a safer, healthier environment for them to grow and learn. This involves direct intervention along with building the capacity of the community to sustain these efforts over time, ensuring long-term impact and support for youth as they navigate the challenges of growing up. Outcomes include: substance use reduction among youth: by deploying evidence-based programs like too good for drugs and catch my breath, the coalition anticipates a measurable decrease in youth substance use, including alcohol and tobacco/nicotine. These programs are designed to equip students with crucial decision-making skills and awareness of the consequences of substance use. enhancement of mental health and community safety: the introduction of programs such as guiding good choices and peer mentoring initiatives are expected to enhance mental health awareness and improve resilience among youth. This initiative will contribute to lower incidence of mental health disorders and risky behaviors. improvement in educational outcomes: the educational interventions aim to improve overall academic achievement and reduce school dropout rates by fostering a safer and more supportive school environment. community engagement and supportive environment: the strategic inclusion of non-alcohol block parties and community forums is projected to foster a more supportive and health-conscious community environment. The junior deputy program assists with redesigning public spaces. These activities are designed to promote family-friendly interactions and community cohesion. policy advocacy and coalition capacity: with enhanced digital engagement and policy advocacy, the coalition expects to expand its influence and effectiveness in promoting substantial policy changes that support its mission of substance use prevention. Each of these strategies includes robust monitoring and evaluation components to assess the effectiveness of the programs and make necessary adjustments. The coalition's comprehensive approach, combining direct educational programs with community engagement and policy advocacy, aims to create a sustainable impact on reducing youth substance use and enhancing community health and safety.
