The Makah Indian Tribe received a $149,516 Project Grant award from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the Native American and Native Hawaiian Library Services federal grant program (CFDA 45.311) to expand access to and enhance the Makah Cultural and Research Center's collections. Specifically, the Makah Tribe will support MCRC's efforts to digitize field notes, index cards, audio recordings, and transcripts from the Robert E. Johnson and Diamond/Miller collections. MCRC archives and library staff will follow best practices for digitization. The newly processed and digitized resources will then be used in MCRC's Makah language program through four bilingual Makah language workshops featuring new visual aids, word lists, and video assets. This aims to reinvigorate Makah culture, history, and language learning at all levels in the Neah Bay, Washington community. The two-year project is scheduled for completion by August 2024.
