About this award
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded Weatherusa LLC $188,347 under the NOAA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program on September 1, 2026. The recipient is developing the SkyEye Camera Grid, a network of high-definition weather camera systems designed to address NEXRAD radar gaps and provide ground-truth data for forecasters and weather models. The system incorporates deep learning for automated analysis of precipitation onset, rapid storm development, and sensor quality control cross-checks, with capabilities to detect low-level clouds, precipitation type, fog, visibility, snow squalls, gust fronts, wildfires, and other phenomena that may be missed by conventional radar or surface stations. Units feature resilient, cost-effective designs with options for multiple view angles, solar power, and 24/7 remote control by multiple users. The platform includes a long-term image archive for time-series applications. Performance is located in Columbus, Ohio, with a completion date of February 26, 2027. The SBIR Program provides federal assistance to small business concerns in three phases: proof of concept, research and development, and commercialization; Phase I grants are normally limited to six months.
Description
The units are resilient and cost-effective with options for multiple view angles, solar power, and 24/7 remote control by multiple users. Using a gridded concept, we plan to deploy units within designated high-priority areas having high visibility of the sky and near-range ground cover. They will offer visual insights into low-level cloud or precipitation-type detection, FOG, visibility, snow squalls, gust fronts, wildfires, and other phenomena that may be missed by nexrad/tdwr or surface stations. The platform will incorporate deep learning for automated analysis, including precipitation onset, rapid storm development, and sensor QC cross-checks. The system offers a long-term image archive for several potential time-series applications. This multi-modal platform would be a valuable tool for NOAA forecasters, media, private companies, weather enthusiasts, and modelers alike. By bridging these gaps, we can enhance situational awareness, especially for small-scale severe weather events. The optional solar power improves reliability even in areas prone to power outages or limited infrastructure. Storm spotters and the public can be involved by flagging significant weather events.
