About this award
The North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) received a $8.2 million Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Cooperative Research Program (CFDA 11.472), awarded October 1, 2025, and extending through September 30, 2030. This grant supports comprehensive marine ecosystem research across the North Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea, and Arctic Ocean through five complementary research initiatives: core research, integrated ecosystem studies, long-term monitoring, outreach, and graduate student awards. The NPRB administers a competitive sub-granting process that incorporates input from public stakeholders, industry partners, and scientific advisory panels to prioritize research activities aligned with fisheries management and marine conservation objectives.
The grant funds three major sub-awarded research initiatives conducted by the University of Washington and University of Alaska Fairbanks, focusing on climate-driven ecosystem changes in the Northern Bering Sea. Deliverables include integrated field and modeling programs quantifying foundational ecosystem shifts through measurements of water-column properties, nutrient dynamics, plankton composition, phytoplankton biomass, and zooplankton abundance and nutritional value; investigations of stratification influences on nutrient cycling and plankton community structure; and analyses of rapid warming impacts on marine resources and subsistence food security through examination of species at upper trophic levels, including crabs, forage fish, salmon, groundfish, seabirds, and marine mammals. Research leverages over $7 million in additional NOAA resources, Indigenous community partnerships, and archival datasets to provide foundational information supporting federal fisheries management and ecosystem forecasting in the rapidly changing Arctic region.
Description
The north pacific research board was created by congress under title IV of HR 2107, and tasked to conduct research activities on or relating to the fisheries or marine ecosystems in the north pacific ocean, bering sea, and arctic ocean. The nprb has established a competitive process for awarding sub-grants based on priorities and criteria established by the board; research priorities follow input given by the public, industry partners, north pacific research boards science and advisory panels, and board members. The priorities are addressed through five complementary and competitive research programs: core, integrated ecosystem research, long-term monitoring, outreach, and graduate student research awards. While the board creates funding recommendations, the secretary of commerce, through his designee, has final approval authority over projects recommended by the north pacific research board.
