Description

Managers are adopting off-bottom oyster culture to increase harvest as oyster populations have continued to decline; however, these structures often reside within the footprint of GS critical habitat without any clear idea of if/how GS are impacted by these sites. Therefore, this three-year project focuses on determining relative GS use of an off-bottom culture site in relation to adjacent open bottom and oyster reef habitats. The proposed combined approach will involve: 1) an acoustic telemetry array deployed at the three focal habitats within mississippi sound, 2) using an acoustic-camera (didson) to observe if/how GS use these habitats, and 3) a gillnet study to capture GS and other fish at these habitats.
