Description
The hope is to support an existing but young aquaculture industry with applicable research, provide an alternative income source for existing fishermen, and to stimulate and enhance the resilience of the coastal community through outlining the technical and economic pathways to a successful scallop operation. Applicants will work to achieve this goal through the objectives of: determining optimal locations, densities, and gear types for bottom scallop culture using ropeless gear; developing an economic model to determine profitability; quantifying and determining causes of variability in scallop texture and flavor; determining optimal locations and gear types for spat collection; determining abiotic and biotic factors relating to scallop apicomplexan (SAP) infections; and overall, supporting developing a viable scallop aquaculture industry in the gulf of maine.
