Description

Project abstract the purpose of this proposed project is to expand the california commercial fishing apprenticeship program to two new fishing regions in the state, santa barbara channel and morro BAY (central california), and continue the program in SAN diego. Activities will include partnering with fishing communities to adapt the curricula to each region's fisheries, ocean conditions and seafood systems; outreach, recruitment and match- making of prospective commercial fishing mentors and apprentices; engagement of regionally-based practical skills trainers; implementing the training in three regions in california; and tracking of apprentices on-the-job competency achievements in each region. Expected outcomes include 12 well-trained new commercial fishers (apprentices) who are placed in crewmember jobs under veteran commercial fishermen; ~25 safety-trained commercial fishers (in addition to the apprentices); new and strengthened relationships among veteran commercial fishers, new entrants, practical skills trainers and california sea grant extension staff; and a model program that can be further adapted and expanded to other regions in california and beyond. Intended beneficiaries include three fishing communities who benefit from new, skilled labor and safety training; the apprentices who receive tuition-free training and help with job placement; and the people california who will benefit from a stronger, more resilient fishing industry (e.g., jobs, economy, sustainable healthy food sources). Subrecipient activities: none.
