Description

This proposal seeks to engage tribal and underserved communities in rural alaska by leveraging the 4-h network in their afterschool program and summer camp to provide place-based, hands-on education to elementary and middle school students, where youth are elevated as educators and activists. The project will work with local community members including tribal elders to engage youth ages 5-12 on OA and local impacts to marine resources and seafood supply. OA data, hands-on learning activities, traditional ecological knowledge, cultural values, and stewardship are well integrated into the proposed curriculum. The final product of the proposal is development of a custom field trip alongside students to document their learning journey and share with their communities.
