About this award

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded Portland State University $266,668 under the Marine Mammal Data Program (CFDA 11.439) Project Grant from August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2023. The university will use the funding to support its comprehensive response to stranded marine mammals in its region, including complete diagnostic sampling and archiving of cetaceans and pinnipeds to document cause of death and ongoing monitoring of gray whales and Guadalupe fur seals. It will also maintain educational and outreach activities, ensure full coverage and accurate reporting of strandings, document and respond to entangled pinnipeds and whales, and collaborate with Northwest ZooPath on disease detection in local marine mammals. The grant aims to further the program's goal of supporting state agencies' collection and analysis of information on marine mammals interacting with state-managed fisheries and marine resources.
