About this award
The Artist Boat, Inc. will receive $438,780 under a two-year Project Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through the NOAA Mission-Related Education Awards program. The grant will support the "Island Style - Systemic Training for Youth Leadership in the Environment" project to design and implement multi-week environmental education programs for all 450 sixth-grade students at the Galveston Independent School District's Austin campus. The project will partner NOAA, GISD staff, area non-profits, and the University of Houston to develop 20 in-class and field-based lessons centered around how the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston Bay, and Galveston Island impact quality of life. Teachers will receive a 40-hour professional development, and students will complete an environmental action project and presentation. Evaluation of the program model will also be conducted to assess impact on students and teachers. If successful, it could provide an example for engaging youth on environmental stewardship.
