Regional innovation by scaling entrepreneurship via university partnerships

The University of Alaska Fairbanks received a $2.85M project grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) under the Basic and Applied Scientific Research program (CFDA 12.300), awarded September 1, 2025, with completion targeted for February 28, 2027. The award supports "Regional Innovation by Scaling Entrepreneurship via University Partnerships," a research initiative focused on advancing entrepreneurial innovation and technology development through collaborative university networks. As a land, sea, and space grant institution with extensive capabilities in Arctic research, geophysics, marine science, and engineering, UAF is positioned to deliver research outputs and technical services aligned with naval operations priorities while simultaneously fostering regional economic development and workforce advancement through strategic academic partnerships.

Given ONR's emphasis on basic and applied research with naval relevance, the project likely encompasses research and development activities, technical analyses, and potentially workforce development or innovation ecosystem activities that leverage UAF's regional positioning and institutional research infrastructure. The award reflects competitive merit-based selection under ONR's evaluation criteria, which emphasize scientific and technical merit, naval relevance, institutional capabilities, and cost realism. The research performance will be conducted at UAF facilities in Alaska with a standard performance period of approximately 18 months.
