About this award

The University of Notre Dame received a $1,000,000 project grant award from the Department of the Navy Secretary of the Navy Office of Naval Research to conduct research titled "COUPLED AIR-SEA PROCESSES AND EM DUCTING RESEARCH (CASPER): EFFECTS OF ATMOSPHERIC BOUNDARY LAYER DYNAMICS ON PROPAGATION." The research will be carried out from January 2021 through January 2023 in Indiana under the Basic and Applied Scientific Research program (CFDA 12.300).

This program supports basic and applied research and technology development at educational institutions, non-profits and other research organizations with the goal of improving naval operations capabilities and training future researchers. The University of Notre Dame will analyze the effects of atmospheric boundary layer dynamics on electromagnetic signal propagation to further understanding of coupled air-sea processes and their impact on naval systems operating in the marine environment. Insights from this research could enhance naval capabilities by informing technology and operations planning.
