The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded Case Western Reserve University a 5-year, $129,612 Project Grant under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop advanced AI methods for evaluating high-risk coronary atherosclerotic plaque using coronary CT angiography (CCTA) imaging. The project aims to create highly automated techniques for assessing high-risk plaque features observed in intravascular optical coherence tomography (IVOCT) and to associate these with CCTA imaging biomarkers. By registering concurrent CCTA and IVOCT data, the research team will develop a CCTA-based classification model to predict high-risk plaque and long-term adverse cardiovascular events. Through this work, the project seeks to enable a non-invasive approach for personalized assessment and management of coronary artery disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S.
