The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awarded 217 Recovery $348,350 on September 30, 2026, under the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment Projects of Regional and National Significance program (CFDA 93.490) to expand peer recovery support services across eight rural counties in northern Michigan. 217 Recovery will deploy trained peer recovery coaches with lived experience to deliver mobile and center-based recovery coaching, employment and education supports, and recovery-ready workplace expansion to adults aged 18 and older with substance use disorders or co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. The target population includes individuals transitioning from treatment, those reentering from county jails or under community supervision, veterans, parents at risk of child welfare involvement, and predominantly low-income individuals. Services will remove rural transportation barriers through mobile service delivery and employ a trauma-informed recovery support model consistent with SAMHSA's six principles. The project will serve 80 unduplicated individuals in year one, 100 in year two, and 120 in year three, totaling 300 served over the three-year performance period ending September 29, 2029. 217 Recovery will operate from Traverse City, Michigan, serving Grand Traverse, Benzie, Leelanau, Antrim, Kalkaska, Wexford, Manistee, and Missaukee Counties—a rural region of approximately 253,000 residents. The award also funds a recovery coach apprenticeship program to develop the future peer workforce and strengthen the region's recovery infrastructure.
