The Forest County Potawatomi Community was awarded a $500,000 five-year Project Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Projects of Regional and National Significance (CFDA 93.243) program. The grant will fund the tribe's "Youth-Focused Tribal Opioid Response Project", which provides opioid and substance use prevention services for tribal youth, as well as recovery support for their adult loved ones. The project integrates school-based, trauma-informed counseling for at-risk youth, along with culturally-focused, community-based prevention support and mentorship from a tribal elder youth prevention coach. To further support these youth and families, the tribe will also offer recovery group therapy for parents and guardians. The project utilizes both traditional and western approaches to delivering these prevention services, with a goal of serving at least 40 unique tribal youth and 10 parents/guardians annually over the 5-year project period.
