GROWING THE EMS WORKFORCE IN CENTRAL AND WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA. - RURAL WESTERN AND CENTRAL SOUTH DAKOTA HAS A CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIANS (EMTS). THE PURPOSED PROGRAM WILL ADDRESS THIS SHORTAGE BY TRAINING 96 NEW EMTS FROM RURAL COMMUNITIES. ADDITIONALLY, BECAUSE THE REGION IS SPARSELY POPULATED, OPPORTUNITIES FOR CURRENT EMTS TO RECEIVE CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS (CEUS) ARE RARE, BUT NECESSARY TO MAINTAIN THEIR CERTIFICATION. THIS PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE EASY ACCESS TO CEUS FOR 340 RURAL EMTS. AS A RESULT, THESE ACTIVITIES ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE ACCESS TO EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES IN RURAL SOUTH DAKOTA.
