This $107,139 federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Geological Survey's Earthquake Hazards Program (CFDA 15.807) will fund a collaborative research project between Montana Technological University and the Wyoming State Geological Survey. The project aims to investigate the geometry and slip rate of the East Gallatin-Reese Creek fault system, a 40-km-long, Quaternary-active normal fault system in northwest Yellowstone National Park. Key activities include mapping fault scarps, measuring fault scarp topographic profiles, and dating fault-displaced deposits using cosmogenic radionuclide exposure dating. The project will generate spatial data on the fault's surface geometry and quantitative data on its late Quaternary slip rate. These results are intended to be direct inputs into the National Seismic Hazard Model, helping to refine probabilistic ground motion maps and hazard assessments for the region. The award period runs from August 1, 2025 through July 31, 2026.
