This $102,656 Project Grant awarded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program Assistance (CFDA 15.807) will enable the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Scripps Institution of Oceanography to collect and analyze new geodetic data to refine the interseismic velocity field around the Anza seismic gap along the San Jacinto Fault. The project aims to improve understanding of the rate of deformation accumulation and earthquake potential in this active fault zone in Southern California. Key project activities include:

  • Collecting new Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations using existing benchmarks near the fault trace
  • Combining campaign and continuous GNSS data with InSAR data to create a high-resolution velocity map
  • Inverting the horizontal velocity data to better constrain the fault slip rate, seismogenic zone thickness, and rigidity structure of the Anza section of the San Jacinto Fault
  • Publishing the updated interseismic velocity results in peer-reviewed literature and making the GNSS data publicly available.

The project directly supports USGS research priorities around improving regional seismic hazard assessment and modeling crustal deformation in Southern California. The research findings will contribute to the next generation of the U.S. National Seismic Hazard Maps.
