The University of Utah was awarded a $139,948 Cooperative Agreement under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810) by the U.S. Geological Survey. The purpose of this 1-year award, effective August 1, 2024, is to produce two new geologic maps of Utah: (1) a map of periglacial, ice-bearing landforms across the state, and (2) a detailed map of the thickness and ice content of the Timpanogos rock glacier in the Wasatch Mountains. The project will also provide catchment-level...
The Utah Geological Survey (UGS), a division of the Utah Department of Natural Resources, received a $1,247,448 Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810). The award will fund several projects over a 24-month period from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2025. Key deliverables include: Completion of 6 new 1:24,000 and 1:62,500 scale geologic maps, with accompanying explanatory...
This federal Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (CFDA 15.810) provides $1,290,924 in funding to the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2026. The award supports several geologic mapping and research initiatives in Utah, including: Producing 8 new 1:24,000 and 1:100,000 scale geologic maps covering 7.5 quadrangles and part of a 30x60 quadrangle Converting 7 published 7.5...
This federal Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the USGS Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program (CFDA 15.821) provides $200,138 to The University of Kentucky Research Foundation to conduct research mapping and assessing landslide hazards in Eastern Kentucky. The key products to be delivered include: Two comprehensive landslide inventories - a historical inventory and an event-based inventory documenting over 1,000 landslides triggered by a major...
This Project Grant award of $116,910, provided by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the USGS Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program (CFDA 15.821), supports the Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) in conducting landslide inventory mapping and hazard assessment activities in Yavapai County, Arizona. The key objectives are to identify and delineate previously unidentified landslides, refine boundaries of previously mapped slides, characterize the geologic settings of...
This $205,015 cooperative agreement from the U.S. Geological Survey will support research on the influence of paraglacial processes on rock slope stability in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Funded through the USGS Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808), the University of Utah will conduct field characterization of rock slope materials and conditions. Researchers will use these data to parameterize thermo-hydro-mechanical models simulating progressive rock mass failure over time during...
This Project Grant award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program (CFDA 15.821) provides $324,522 to The University of Kentucky Research Foundation to develop a comprehensive landslide inventory and susceptibility maps for the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region. The project, running from November 1, 2025 to October 31, 2027, will utilize LiDAR data change detection to create the first-ever detailed landslide inventory for this...
The University of Arizona, through the Arizona Board of Regents, has been awarded a $154,398 Project Grant from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program (CFDA 15.821). The 1-year project aims to collaborate with the Hopi Tribe to map geologic hazards, specifically landslide risks, at First Mesa in northeastern Arizona. The key project objectives are to: 1) create baseline geologic and topographic maps of landslide hazards, 2) provide...
This Cooperative Agreement award from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (CFDA 15.807) provides $1,022,986 in funding to the University of Utah to operate and maintain a network of 115 seismic monitoring stations across the Utah region. The project supports the goals of the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS) and the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) by: Integrating seismic data from the University of Utah's network with data from...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded a $353,413.46 Cooperative Agreement to the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) under the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (CFDA 15.073) program. The project aims to create an initial inventory of mine waste in western central Utah, focusing on several major mining districts, and to conduct a detailed characterization study of mine waste in the Tintic mining area. Key deliverables include a GIS database of mine waste locations, extents, and compositions, as...

PROJECT ABSTRACT SUMMARYPROJECT TITLE: WASATCH FRONT AND BACK LANDSLIDE INVENTORY MAPPING SALT LAKE, SUMMIT, AND UTAH COUNTIES UTAHPROJECT PERIOD: 07 15 2024 THROUGH 07 15 2025THE WASATCH FRONT OF UTAH IS THE PRIMARY LOCATION OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND POPULATION GROWTHWITHIN THE STATE. THE MOUNTAIN BOUND VALLEYS ALONG THE WASATCH FRONT ARE EXPERIENCING URBAN EXPANSIONBEYOND THE VALLEY FLOOR AND DEVELOPMENT IS TARGETING THE FOOTHILLS AND LOWER MOUNTAIN CANYONS INTO THEWASATCH BACK TO ACCOMMODATE GROWTH. EXPANSION INTO THESE STEEPER SLOPE AREAS ENLARGES THE RISK OFLANDSLIDE IMPACTING THE PUBLIC AND INFRASTRUCTURE. IN ADDITION TO DEVELOPMENT EXPANSION, IN THE PAST FEWYEARS, UTAH HAS EXPERIENCED ABOVE NORMAL TO RECORD BREAKING SNOWPACK, INCREASING THE LANDSLIDE ANDROCKFALL POTENTIAL FOR REACTIVATING LANDSLIDES AND FOR SUSCEPTIBLE SLOPES DURING SPRING RUNOFF AND BEYOND.THE UTAH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY (UGS) PROPOSES LANDSLIDE INVENTORY MAPPING IN SELECTED AREAS ALONGTHE WASATCH FRONT AND BACK TO ASSIST IN HAZARD REDUCTION FOR THE PUBLIC EXPANDING INTO STEEPER SLOPEDAREAS. THE UGS ASSISTS IN HAZARD REDUCTION BY PROVIDING LANDSLIDE INVENTORY MAPPING, AMONG OTHERGEOLOGICAL HAZARDS, TO THE LAND DEVELOPMENT REGULATORS AND OTHERS IN AN ADVISORY CAPACITY. THE UGSPROPOSES TO MAP LANDSLIDES IN THE EASTERN SALT LAKE VALLEY TO THE WASATCH BACK DOWN TO NORTHERN UTAHVALLEY, COVERING 12 CONTIGUOUS 7.5 QUADRANGLES. THIS AREA CONTAINS MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE FORTRANSPORTATION, UTILITIES, DRINKING WATER, AND RECREATION. THE UGS PROPOSES TO PERFORM LANDSLIDE INVENTORYMAPPING WITH ATTRIBUTED INFORMATION AND PUBLISHING THE INVENTORY IT THE UGS GEOLOGIC HAZARDS PORTAL(HTTPS: HAZARDS.GEOLOGY.UTAH.GOV ).
