Description

Activities
The recipient first install new creepmeters at three sites along the SAN andreas and calaveras faults to fill in large instrumental gaps. Second, they will extend the instrumentation at two existing sites on the SAN andreas fault to allow for more detailed analyses of shallow fault creep at varying spatial and temporal scales and evaluate environmental effects. Third, the recipient will continue a similar analysis of recently acquired creep data at a well-instrumented site on the SAN andreas fault.deliverables and expected outcomes: these research efforts are expected to culminate in one peer-reviewed publication and five new creepmeter instruments with new creep data made available to the community. The recipient will participate in the 2025 annual USGS northern california earthquake hazards workshops to keep the interested communities aware of our work.
Intended beneficiaries
Installing more creepmeters will allow for better estimates of fault creep and will improve and increase surface creep observations used in the national seismic hazard model this project will therefore contribute to refining the seismic hazard assessment in the national seismic hazard model. The project will also assess changes in creep rates at different locations that can then be used to evaluate fault coupling changes, and the new creepmeter instruments can be used to measure crustal strain. The creepmeter installations will offer the opportunity to learn how to install creepmeters and more generally perform geophysical fieldwork to graduate and undergraduate students.
