The Regents of the University of Idaho received a $618,648 Project Grant award from the U.S. Geological Survey's Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805) to improve hydrological predictions across the continental United States through better characterization of below-ground soil-vegetation processes. The 3-year project aims to enhance water budget predictions by: 1) constraining root zone storage capacity, 2) improving modeling of plant hydraulic configuration and root water uptake, and 3) incorporating soil structure effects on soil hydraulics. The project will deliver four peer-reviewed publications, a Ph.D. dissertation, model code, and a new undergraduate/graduate-level course on hands-on hydrological modeling. Key intended beneficiaries include students, scientists, modelers, decision-makers, and policymakers. The project will also train one postdoc, one Ph.D. student, and three undergraduates in water resources research.
